5 Days: The Full Galapagos Experience: Exploration Adventure including San Cristobal and Santa Cruz Islands

Day One

Morning

Galapagos Interpretation Center – learn about the fascinating natural, human and conservation history of the Galapagos Islands.

Frigatebird Hill and Darwin Bay – stroll the town, visit with our friendly sea lions, hike a lava trail and photograph frigatebirds, local flora and fauna, and the panoramic view of the harbor at Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and Kicker Rock.

Afternoon

Take a bike tour of San Cristobal – there’s no better way to get to know your environs than by bike so borrow one of ours and set out on your own for an exploration of San Cristobal Island.

Day Two

Morning

San Cristobal Highlands and El Junco – visit the largest repository of fresh water in all of Galapagos.

Galapaguera Tortoise Breeding Center – view giant Galapagos tortoises in the wild

Afternoon

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno – plan for an authentic Ecuadorian lunch in town and time for shopping and settling in with the sea lions crossing main street and sleeping on the benches.

Authentic Galapagos Coffee Plantation – visit a gorgeous coffee plantation, completely ecologically sustainable and bird friendly, as recognized by the Smithsonian Institution. Return to the hotel for a rest and then dinner in town at an authentic Ecuadorian restaurant and maybe even some dancing to our local salsa beats.

Day Three

Morning

Isla Lobos  – snorkel with engaging sea lion mothers and pups, marine iguanas, frigatebirds, boobies and lush sea life.

Kicker Rock – Enjoy the captivating and iconic Galapagos landmark, an excellent location for photography and home to boobies, gulls, frigate birds and endemic Galapagos marine iguanas. Snorkel in the company of sea lions and many beautiful species of fish, as well as sharks, sea turtles and rays.

Afternoon

Puerto Grande – relax on this beautiful beach on San Cristobal island, take advantage of photographic opportunities,  a late-afternoon swim and a gorgeous Galapagos sunset.

Day Four

Morning

Charles Darwin Research Station  Cruise to Santa Cruz Island to visit the site established by the Galapagos National Park as a conservation program for what was a dwindling population of giant Galapagos tortoise. The research station houses many species of Galapagos tortoises and is the center of much of the scientific study and exploration that occurs throughout Galapagos.

Downtown Puerto Ayora – walk through the most highly populated city in Galapagos, enjoy shopping, delicious local cuisine and the fish market where sea lions and pelicans sidle up to the fish counters to get their taste of the ocean’s fresh bounty.

Afternoon in Santa Cruz Highlands

Los Gremelos – Visit two huge volcanic craters and learn about the flora and fauna on Santa Cruz Island.

Lava Tunnel and Tortoises in the Wild – Giant Galapagos tortoises freely wander through the highlands where you will also have the opportunity to walk down into a natural lava tunnel as large as the New York subway.

Day Five

La Loberia – visit a beautiful coral sand beach populated by sea lions resting on the rocks and sand; learn about endemic plant species including button mangrove, white mangrove, chala, palo santo, cotton, Tiquilia, morning glory and other species of the littoral zone such as the cacho de chivo, whose seeds are the main source of food for several species of finches; photograph the finches, along with yellow warblers, frigatebirds and large Galapagos marine iguanas.
