Charles Darwin Research Station – Cruise to Santa Cruz Island to visit the site established by the Galapagos National Park as a conservation program for what was a dwindling population of giant Galapagos tortoise. The research station houses many species of Galapagos tortoises and is the center of much of the scientific study and exploration that occurs throughout Galapagos.
Downtown Puerto Ayora – walk through the most highly populated city in Galapagos, enjoy shopping, delicious local cuisine and the fish market where sea lions and pelicans sidle up to the fish counters to get their taste of the ocean’s fresh bounty.
Afternoon in Santa Cruz Highlands
Los Gremelos – Visit two huge volcanic craters and learn about the flora and fauna on Santa Cruz Island.
Lava Tunnel and Tortoises in the Wild – Giant Galapagos tortoises freely wander through the highlands where you will also have the opportunity to walk down into a natural lava tunnel as large as the New York subway.
La Loberia – visit a beautiful coral sand beach populated by sea lions resting on the rocks and sand; learn about endemic plant species including button mangrove, white mangrove, chala, palo santo, cotton, Tiquilia, morning glory and other species of the littoral zone such as the cacho de chivo, whose seeds are the main source of food for several species of finches; photograph the finches, along with yellow warblers, frigatebirds and large Galapagos marine iguanas.
